What’s WordPress?

Technically Speaking…

WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. WordPress is used by over 16.7% of Alexa Internet’s “top 1 million” websites and as of August 2011 manages 22% of all new websites. WordPress is currently the most popular blogging system in use on the Internet. (We took that straight from Wikipedia)

Non-Technically Speaking…

WordPress is arguably the best content management system out there, and is the most used CMS in the world.  The other one worth noting, and second most-used CMS, is Joomla, which is also excellent.  Why did we choose WordPress over Joomla?  WordPress is easier to use — not just for our benefit… for yours!

We are going to build your site and turn it over to you to maintain.  Would you want to be using a CMS that’s been described as “so complex it’s dizzying?”  Neither would we.  So, we start with something simple, incorporate all of the cutting edge functionality you want, and then train you in a matter of hours.  You simply don’t need all the extras that Joomla comes pre-installed with.

WordPress, like Joomla, is free and open source, which means that anyone can work with the code behind the scenes.  This is important, because once you have a WordPress site, you’ll never need to rebuild it again! No matter who your webmaster is, anyone can update it for you, change the template (design), and add new features without rebuilding it from the ground up.  You’ll also have complete ownership of the site, and will not need to leave your site behind if we ever part ways.

You’ve heard that WordPress is a Blog…

That’s true, but in recent years, it has been developed into something much more sophisticated.  WordPress is great for:

  • Blogging, and…
  • Dynamic Photo and Video Galleries
  • Large websites with multiple sub-sections
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Elegant Dropdown Menus
  • Organizing Media, including images, videos, audio, pdfs, documents and more
  • Incorporating social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Linked In
  • Building sophisticated sites quickly and cleanly
